Before We Show You Where We’re Going, Here’s Where We Started

Over the next few months, things around here are going to look a little different.

We’re remodeling our office. We’re refreshing our brand. We’re building a studio so we can create more useful content for business owners. And we have a few other things in the works that we’re excited to share.

But before we show you where we’re going, we thought it might be worth sharing a little more about where we came from — and why we started.

This firm started pretty simply.

No big office. No elaborate business plan. No clients. And certainly no employees.

In fact, it started because I had just been fired.

The next morning, I was supposed to give a presentation at a networking group about what I did for a living.

I could have stayed home. I had plenty of reasons to.

I had a family of seven depending on me. We were just starting to get away from living check to check, and suddenly I was wondering how quickly I could find another job and whether we were going to start falling behind again.

Nobody would have blamed me for missing that meeting. But I also knew that if I didn’t show up, someone else would have to scramble to fill the time I had committed to.

So I showed up.

The only problem was that the presentation I had planned to give the day before no longer made much sense. I needed a new answer to a pretty basic question:

“What is it that you do?”

So I came up with one.

That idea eventually became this firm.

It started with the belief that there was a better way to serve business owners and their families — and a closet in our home that doubled as my first office.

A lot has changed since then.

What hasn’t changed is what we want this firm to be: locally and family owned, invested in the people and businesses we serve, and always looking for a better way to help our clients move forward.

So while we’re working on the next version of our space and our brand, we’re also going to share a few stories about how we got here, why we’ve made some of the decisions we have, and where we’re headed next.

Including one about an old power strip that somehow survived all of it.

More on that one soon.
